| Join as...a civilian instructor |
- Adult volunteers make up the backbone of our organisation. They are responsible for organising activities, passing on knowledge to cadets or generally assisting in the running of the squadron.
- We welcome any enthusiastic volunteer - male or female - from any social background, culture or religion.
- You do not need to have any previous military experience - many of our volunteers don't!
- As a Civilian Instructor (CI), you can give as much - or as little - time as you can.
- Throughout your time with us, you will get the opportunity to gain valuable skills and qualifications which may be useful in your normal employment.
- And there's always the possibility to advance into uniformed service after your time as a CI.
- Interested? Why not get in touch? Or visit our FAQs for more information.

| Join as...a non-commissioned officer |
- Uniformed service typically begins at the non-commisioned level for our adult volunteers, generally first joining as a Civilian Instructor and completing a short probationary period of 3 months.
- After experience all the organisation has to offer, should you decide to proceed toward non-commissioned service, you will be interviewed by a panel at Wing level.
- If you are successful, you will appointed a Sergeant (ATC) and will be given your uniform and all the necessary training required to fulfil your role.
- You may also claim up to 28 days pay each year, plus additional travel allowances.
- There's also room for advancement up the ranks to Flight Sergeant and Warrant Officer (ATC), instructing and developing not just cadets, but other adult non-commisioned officers beneath you.
- And rest-assured, wearing the uniform of the Royal Air Force does not mean you can deployed to a war zone - your job will be to teach and instruct air cadets!
- If you are interested in non-commissioned service in the ATC and you're not already a Civilian Instructor, get in touch with the squadron and we can set you on your way. If you would like further information, take a look at our FAQs.

Join as...a commissioned officer |
- Commissioned officers manage and administer the ATC, from positions as Squadron Commanders to staff positions, all the way up to Wing Commanders, managing a group of local squadrons.
- They are commissioned into the Training Branch of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
- To join as a commissioned officer, you will generally spend time as a Civilian Instructor and/or adult non-commissioned officer before applying for a panel at Wing level.
- If you are successful, you will be put forward to a Regional panel that will have the final say on whether they think you have got what it takes to become a commissioned officer.
- As an officer you will be expected to commit to 12 hours of your time each month.
- You will be entitled to up to 28 days pay each year, plus additional travel allowances.
- You will be expected to attend an Officers Initial Course at Royal Air Force Cranwell within your first year.
- On completion of your training course, you will be confirmed as a Pilot Officer VR(T).
- From here on you will have the opportunity to progress through the ranks to Flying Officer VR(T) and above, potentially all the way to Wing Commander VR(T) with various training courses open to you.
- And rest-assured, wearing the uniform of the Royal Air Force does not mean you can deployed to a war zone - your job will be to teach and instruct air cadets and staff!
- If you think you are officer material and are not already an adult instructor get in touch or visit our FAQs for more information.
